History of Stillwater

Historically, the adirondacks had been considered a forbidding area of wildlife prior to the 1870's. Only after the famous writers Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson began writing about the wild beauty of the adirondacks did its image transform into the morte popular view of wilderness in positive terms, as a source of spiritual renewal. Stillwater Hotel's motivation is to keep that concept alive today. Since 1894, Stillwater Hotel has been a haven for hunters, fishermen and locals. In those 120 years, we have managed to expand our business to snowmobilers, campers, and all others truely looking to "really get away from it all. Stillwater Reservoir has many scenic trails, beautiful campsites, boating, fantastic bass fishing, and a wide range of wildlife including Bald Eagles, Hummingbirds, Moose, Deer, Loons and Coyotes.

Many of the historical areas still remain true to their roots in the Stillwater area. Across from Stillwater Hotel is Beaver River, a Hamlet with a year-round population of about 40. Residents go without electricity, cable, internet and many of the other things we could not go without. Boat tours of the reservior are avaliable during the summer here. During the winter, when snowmobiling down the railroad tracks, you may come across old railroad stations, such as Big Moose Station (now a restaurant), or other abandoned stations. The adventures here are limitless and not limited to any season.

The history of Stillwater is evident. Numerous expansions have been made to the building, however many aspects of the building still depict the age of the building. In the Hotel, our "Ice-House" room was originally the refridgeration unit for the building, Where men and horses would drag massive blocks of ice in and fill the room since electricity was not brought to still water until the 50's. Today the ice-house is much more warm and cozy than it implies!
